Opening Packs
Pack reveals are the heart of any TCG. Each pack you open contains 5 cards drawn from a weighted pool. Cards come in five rarities:
| Rarity | Drop Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Common | ~60% | Foundational cards — build your early deck around these |
| Uncommon | ~25% | Solid backbone for starter decks |
| Rare | ~10% | Noticeable power jump — hold onto these |
| Epic | ~4% | High-impact cards that define deck strategies |
| Legendary | ~1% | Game-changing cards — your collection's crown jewels |
Pity Timer: Guaranteed Legendary at 30 Pulls
Every pack pull increases your odds until a Legendary drops. Open 30 packs without pulling one? The 31st pack is a guaranteed Legendary. The pity counter resets after each Legendary.
Pro tip: Save your packs and open them during Double Rewards events — same pity system, but every card you pull is worth twice the shards.
Building a Deck
Every deck holds 30 cards. The synergy between your cards' archetypes is what makes a deck powerful — not just raw rarity. Browse the Aggro deck guide, Control deck guide, and Midrange deck guide for proven builds.
Key Archetype Synergies
| Archetype | Playstyle | Win Condition | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aggro | Fast, aggressive — flood the board early | Deal 20 damage before turn 6 | New players; fast games, fast learning |
| Control | Defensive — answer everything, win late | Outlast opponent over 10+ turns | Strategic thinkers; more complex matchups |
| Midrange | Balanced — adapt to opponent's pace | Out-value opponent in the mid-game | Most flexible; great all-rounder |
| Combo | Set up a game-winning sequence | One turn, one devastating combo | High-skill ceiling; rewarding when mastered |
Recommended Starter Build
- Open your first 10 packs and collect what you get
- Focus on cards that feel powerful to play (good text, strong effect)
- Fill the remaining slots with your highest-rarity cards
- Trim to exactly 30 cards — no more, no less
- Play 5 practice battles, note which cards feel dead or clunky, swap them out
Once you have a feel for your collection, head to the archetype pages for refined builds with specific card recommendations.
Arena Battles
Async PvP — Play On Your Schedule
You don't need to be online at the same time as your opponent. Each battle runs on a turn clock (30 seconds per turn), and you can make your moves whenever it suits you within the window. Start a battle in the morning, respond to your opponent's moves on lunch break, finish the match that evening.
The Ranking System
| Rank Tier | Points to Advance | Season Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 0–999 | 500 shards |
| Silver | 1000–1999 | 1,200 shards + 1 Epic pack |
| Gold | 2000–2999 | 2,500 shards + 2 Epic packs |
| Platinum | 3000–3999 | 4,000 shards + 1 Legendary |
| Shadowmaster | 4000+ | 8,000 shards + 2 Legendaries + season card back |
Earn bonus points for win streaks (3+ wins in a row grants +20% points). Season resets every 4 weeks — new season, fresh ladder, new reward pool.
Crafting & Disenchanting
How Shards Work
Every duplicate card you pull can be disenchanted for Shards. Rarity determines shard value:
| Rarity | Disenchant Value | Cost to Craft |
|---|---|---|
| Common | 5 shards | 50 shards |
| Uncommon | 20 shards | 200 shards |
| Rare | 100 shards | 800 shards |
| Epic | 500 shards | 3,000 shards |
| Legendary | 2,000 shards | 10,000 shards |
When to Disenchant
- Keep: Every copy of Legendary and Epic cards — they won't always appear in packs
- Keep: Cards that fit your current deck or a deck you're building toward
- Disenchant: Duplicate Commons and Uncommons after keeping 3 copies of each (3 is the max you'll ever need in a deck)
- Disenchant: Rares you already have 3+ copies of and never play
Crafting Priority Order
- Complete your current deck's core — a missing 2-copy Legendary is a bigger problem than 4 missing Rare plays
- Fill slots in your Sideboard (cards swapped in for specific matchups)
- Build toward a second competitive deck — variety improves your ranking performance
Season Pass
Every 4-week season comes with a Season Pass that tracks your progress and rewards you for daily play. Passes have two tiers:
| Feature | Free Track | Season Pass ($9.99) |
|---|---|---|
| Daily login rewards | Yes | Yes |
| Season track progression | 5 tiers | 30 tiers |
| Season-exclusive card (Legendary) | No | Yes |
| Shard bonus multiplier | 1x | 1.5x on all disenchants |
| Battle history replay | Last 3 matches | Unlimited |
| Season card back cosmetic | No | Yes |
The season-exclusive Legendary card is only available through the Season Pass — it enters the Crafting pool 6 months after the season ends. If you want it on day one, the pass is the only path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shadow Realms free to play?
Yes. You can collect cards, build decks, and compete in arena battles entirely for free. Spending money is entirely optional — the free track gives you access to all core game modes, daily rewards, and season progression.
Do I need to download anything?
No. Shadow Realms runs in your browser — Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari are all supported. No install, no update, no launcher. Open the game and start playing.
How long do arena battles last?
Most matches finish in 8–15 minutes. Async PvP means you don't need to sit through a live game — you make your moves on your own schedule within the turn timer (30 seconds per turn).
Can I play on mobile?
Yes. Shadow Realms is responsive and playable on mobile browsers. The full game is available on iOS Safari and Android Chrome/Firefox. The UI adapts to touch input, and card interactions are designed for smaller screens.
What's the pity timer, and how does it work?
Pull 30 packs without a Legendary, and your 31st pack is guaranteed Legendary. This pity counter resets after each Legendary drop. It applies to all pack types and carries across the entire season — no need to open all 30 at once.
Should I spend shards on crafting or save them?
If you're missing 1–2 cards that would make your current deck work, craft those. If your collection is thin and you're not sure what you want, save shards and open more packs instead — you'll discover more options while building your pity counter toward a guaranteed Legendary.
What happens when a new season starts?
Rank resets to Bronze. Your cards and collection stay intact. Season Pass progress resets. A new season-exclusive card is added to the pass. Ranked rewards for the previous season are mailed to your inbox immediately.
Are there tournaments or competitive events?
Weekly tournaments run every Sunday with prize shard pools. Top-ranked players in Platinum and Shadowmaster also receive monthly invites to restricted events with higher stakes and exclusive rewards.
